Aisling Hubert launched private prosecutions against two doctors who offered abortions because the child involved was a girl.
Aisling Hubert began criminal proceedings against two doctors who were filmed offering ‘gender-abortion’.
In 2012, undercover reporters from the Daily Telegraph filmed two doctors agreeing to abortions simply because the babies were girls.
A police investigation followed and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) considered prosecution. However, the CPS concluded that, whilst there was sufficient evidence to provide a realistic prospect of prosecution, it would ‘not be in the public interest’ to bring such a prosecution.
Following the CPS’s decision, Aisling launched private prosecutions of the two doctors. The CPS intervened, took over the cases and dropped them. Aisling was then ordered to pay £36,000 in costs to the doctors. Further costs of £11,000 were awarded against her, after she challenged the costs order and the CPS’s decision to intervene in the prosecutions.
In January 2017, a settlement was reached with the doctors. This still left Aisling with a huge legal bill to pay but thanks to the generosity of supporters, enough money was raised to meet those costs.
