John Steele

John was arrested and prosecuted for asking about the Quran’s teaching on domestic violence

Overview

  • John Steele has been a street preacher for 25 years without incident
  • While in Rotherham town centre, he saw a Muslim woman wearing a hijab who was manning a public awareness stall about domestic abuse
  • Aware of controversial verses in the Quran, John asked how Islamic teachings could be reconciled with the stall’s message. He then shared how Christianity teaches men to love their wives in the same way that Jesus loves the Church
  • Despite the brief and non-threatening nature of the exchange, an hour later he was surrounded by four police officers demanding his personal details and threatening him with arrest.
  • After he was detained, the Crown Prosecution Service eventually dropped charges against him.
