About the book
Revolution to Revival (1791-1900) is the second volume in The Nation’s Gospel series, a unique four-volume work, describing the progress of the Christian faith in Britain since the Reformation. This is living history, relating the faith of past generations and its effect on society, and has much to teach us today.
Revolution to Revival covers the period from the dark days of the French Revolution, through the mid-19th century revival, to the beginning of the 20th century. It describes the influence of the Clapham Sect, the Primitive Methodists, the Brethren and the Salvation Army, and the expansion of evangelism in the Church of England and other denominations. These included education, tract distribution, family religion, open-air preaching, colporteurs, missions and social work. Woven into this story of zeal are the intellectual challenges to the Christian faith and doctrine coming from both inside and outside the churches.
Primarily a book about faithful Christians’ evangelistic efforts, this book will be of value to all those who wish to understand the spiritual forces at work within the nation and churches, and the collapse of their respective moral values and standing in the world. The call to share the gospel far and wide is just as important for us today. Steering us through the numerous ways in which the gospel was taken around the country during that period, this book is an essential tool for anyone wishing to remain faithful to that calling, including particularly, evangelists, ministers, theology students, church historians, sociologists – in fact, all Christians and others concerned with these critical matters.
About the author
Jeremy A. Thomas, LLB, LLM practised law in the City of London for nearly 25 years with an international law firm where he was a partner. He has made numerous contributions to legal periodicals, books and festschrifts relating to public international law, human rights and general commercial law. He has spent the last decade writing and researching The Nation’s Gospel series. The first volume, Reformation to Revolution (1516-1791), was published in 2017. Jeremy is a member of the Bishop’s Council of the Diocese of London and the Two Cities Area Council. He is a Deputy Churchwarden of All Souls Church Langham Place.
