Sarah Kuteh

Sarah was fired from her job as a nurse for talking to patients about her faith and occasionally offering prayer, while helping them to prepare for surgery.

Sarah Kuteh is a Christian nurse who lost her job at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford after complaints were made that she had talked to patients about her faith and had given a Bible to one patient. The hospital also brought a case questioning Sarah’s fitness to practice as a nurse before the professional regulatory body, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Sarah’s job involved asking patients about their own faith, as part of a pre-assessment questionnaire.

In a judgment in July 2018, the NMC panel unanimously ruled that Sarah was fully fit to practise nursing and that it was “in the public interest to return an otherwise experienced and competent nurse into practice.” It revoked all restrictions on her nursing practice with immediate effect.

Commenting on her case, Sarah said: “I would not wish this on anyone. Even though my clinical practise is not under question at all, my faith is.

“But this is a brilliant outcome. To the Christian Legal Centre team, Christian Concern and all those who have been supporting me, I want to say thank you so much for your support.”
