Foreign aid 'must protect religious freedom'

Printer-friendly version

Lord Alton and Fiona Bruce MP have called on the government to consider the protection of religious freedom within their foreign aid programme.

Writing for Conservative Home, Lord Alton said that some UK aid is being sent to countries that violate Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which protects freedom of religion. He emphasised that this leads to “discrimination, persecution...and even genocide” and suggested NGOs should aid these nations instead.
