Dr Ian Paisley - an “icon of Christian leadership”

Printer-friendly version

Dr Ian Paisley, the most prominent Protestant leader and preacher of our time, has died aged 88.

Dr Paisley fought for decades against the political demands of the IRA in Northern Ireland.  He then made history as a peacemaker when he became First Minister in the new NI Assembly in 2007 in a coalition with his former political opponents, Sinn Fein.

Dr Paisley was a founding member of the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster, in which he served for 57 years, and was made a Life Peer at the end of 2010.

He died today after a long illness.

Ade Omooba, Co-Founder of Christian Concern, who protested outside Parliament alongside Dr Paisley to defend Christian freedoms, paid tribute today: “If I look at Ian Paisley’s life, knowing him to be at the forefront of fighting for godly laws, I see a man who was a true leader.

“We don’t have enough true Christian statesmen who live for what they believe.  He never deviated from what he believed and what he stood for. When standing with him outside Parliament, I really felt his passion to see the hope of Christ returned to the heart of this nation.

"At this time our heart and sympathies go out to his family."
