MPs could vote on 'gender-abortion'

Printer-friendly version

Fiona Bruce MP has tabled an amendment to the Serious Crime Bill confirming that 'gender abortion' is against the law.

MPs could vote in the next few days to confirm that abortion on the basis of a baby's gender is illegal.

Evidence

The move is necessary because the UK's largest private abortion provider, BPAS and even the British Medical Association, say that abortion on the grounds of gender is not necessarily illegal.

Mrs Bruce also points to evidence that such abortions are currently taking place. In an article for the Daily Telegraph, she said: “The reality is that sex-selective abortion is happening in the UK.

“We know this partly because UK women are coming forward in increasing numbers to tell their stories, and partly due to the existence of authoritative, peer-reviewed research which has found evidence of sex imbalances in birth ratios in some UK populations…”

Backing

MPs gave clear backing to Mrs Bruce’s Abortion (Sex Selection) Bill in November last year, which passed its First Reading by 181 votes to 1.

She commented: “It is clear to me that there is wide cross-party support for the bill, and that this is an issue which unites people who are usually on opposite sides of the abortion debate.”
